where we began
The journey began in Philadelphia, PA., growing up in the late 70's before joining the U.S. Navy in 1984. Miraculously we reconnect thousands of miles away at a McDonald's drive through in Honolulu, Hi. We were married in a year, and had 3 beautiful children before retiring in 2006.
Our 20 years of Naval careers took us around the world, experiencing the vibrant cultures of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Taiwanese, Sudanese, Indonesian, Polynesian, American Samoan, Australian, and so many others.
Neither of our careers were remotely close to culinary but we both LOVED to cook and watch others enjoy our foods. For years, friends, family, neighbors and strangers would say "you guys should start a food service business."
Through much prayer, fear, and investing most our savings, we launched Spain's Smokehouse Catering. Quickly building a solid customer base with BIG taste buds, specific nutritional requirements and a love for our foods. Our largest clients were Hospitals, Clinics, Dental Offices, and Schools. They would constantly ask how the foods were seasoned to make them taste so good.
So we"Put it in a bottle" and launched Spain's Spices.
Although very aware the food industry was nearly saturated with spices, we felt confident our blends were different. Our seasonings were developed around a specific flavor profile that didn't exist on grocery store shelves. The Spain's Spice business literally began in our kitchen, mixing herbs in a bowl; which initially included sugar and a higher sodium content. Many of our clinical clients and others began asking if it were possible to create the same great tasting meals with less or no sugar and a lower sodium content?
So out came the sugar and we lowered the sodium nearly 50%. Naturally this scared the crap out of us because it completely changed the flavor profile of the blends.
Frantically, we consulted local industry spice and blending professionals to assist with the study of herbs and spices, the creation of multiple recipe prototypes before smartly investing and settling on set of healthy blends ready for "Go to Market," without sacrificing what our dedicated followers loved.
We prayed, God did what he always does and before we knew it, we had a consistent following. People absolutely loved our seasonings! The products did so well, we expanded the line by adding new flavors, and closed our Catering company.
